Time For Service? All caravans and motorhomes require regular servicing to maintain good standards of performance and safety regardless of how much or how little they are used. Whilst there are certain items that can be carried out by the owner, today's warranties and insurances require that servicing is carried out by a competent workshop. |
|
To assist in identifying such workshops the Caravan Club, the Camping and Caravanning Club and the National Caravan Council got together in 1998 to create and oversee an approved workshop scheme. For the first few years the scheme was administered by Jones Vening Ltd, a company formed from the old inspection arm of the AA. More recently this task has been taken on by the National Caravan Council. Workshops registered under the scheme are entitled to display the Approved Workshop logo (right). |

In essence before any work is carried out you should be aware of and have agreed the basic cost of the service. Also, where appropriate, you can sign in advance to agree the limit on any expenditure above this level that might become necessary. No additional chargeable work should be carried out without your express authority.
So just what should your dealer look at during your caravan's annual service? Here is a summary of requirements under the scheme:-
- Chassis & Equipment
- Suspension, Wheels, Tyres & Brakes
- Road vehicle lighting
- Gas system
- Ventilation
- 12 volt electrical system
- 240 volt electrical system
- Water system
- Damp check
Unless requested the check will not normally include such items as the serviceability of fridges or other appliances. Dometic and Thetford recommend that their fridges are serviced every 18 months or so. I know from personal experience that failure to observe this can lead to nasty fumes within the van!
Beware that workshops often have distinct levels of service (e.g. Bronze, Silver and Gold). Often only the Gold service covers all the items above. However it may also cover other items such as smoke alarm, fridge/cooker operation, windows and fittings etc. Usually it is the Gold level of service that is required for warranty purposes.

Before you leave the workshop check that you have been given an ACW sticker to display in your van window or on the 'A' frame cover. Apparently police performing roadside checks often look for these stickers and if found you may well be waved on.
Hopefully you will be entirely satisfied with the standard of your servicing. If you are not, and your dealer is not co-operative over putting matters right, then with the Approved Workshop scheme you do have an independent body to complain to.
